Like most people I'm motivated by goals. Over the past several years I've decided that some of my self-improvement goals (losing weight, becoming a better parent, being more financially prudent, etc.) need to have some goals and challenges established to get me, and keep me, on track.
With that in mind I thought I might just put this up here to publicly announce some goals and (hopefully) keep me from falling short. I'm guessing the public shaming of not making it will serve as additional motivation. I'm obviously not listing anything overly personal (financial goals, etc.), but I figured I might as well throw this stuff out there. Also, if anyone is going to be at any of the events, please let me know.
CHARITY
- Raise $5,000 + for a variety of charities in 2013
FITNESS
- ALARC New Years Ice Dive - http://www.alarc.com/events/ice-dive
This takes place in Excelsior, MN on New Year's Morning. It's a bit cold and I haven't done this before - not sure why I find this to be a goal or really why I'm doing it, but at least it does raise money for charity.
- Tough Mudder Minnesota - http://toughmudder.com/events/twincities/
July 20th - actually takes place at in Somerset, WI. I did this last year and finished, but I'm going to try to use the event this year to raise money for charity. If you haven't run a race like this, these adventure races are very popular at the moment and it's pretty damn fun, but completely goofy. Might take them up on the free mohawk this year...
- TriTonka Sprint Triathlon - http://www.tritonka.com/
This one has personal meaning for me - when I started getting more into exercising a couple of years ago (not that I'm some sort of major 'athlete' now) I picked this one as the first that I was going to run and, while I managed to finish, I almost drowned in the swim, threw up on the bike race (mostly water that I had swallowed in the swim), and crossed the line dead last. Then my legs locked up with massive cramping and I fell flat on my back. Good times. Needless to say I came back last year a bit better prepared and did better. I'll be there again this year if they hold it.
- Minneapolis Duathlon - http://www.minneapolisdu.org/
I'm trying to do this one every year and I keep working on improving my time. So far so good and I'm hoping that I can improve again this year
- Monster Dash Minneapolis - http://www.minnesotamonster.org/
I'm trying to run this one every year as well - two years ago I ran the 10 mile and managed to finish the half marathon in 2012. I'm thinking of scaling-back again this year to the 10-mile as I've done the half marathon now and not sure if I want to spend the full time training.
